Siza Wena' - Esorfranki sponsors students at 'Engineering Planet Future' Indaba

In its initial phase, Esorfranki's recently launched 'Siza Wena' or 'Help You' initiative, sponsored 100 previously disadvantaged learners and recently qualified Civil Engineering professionals to attend the 'Engineering Planet Future' indaba hosted by the SA Institution of Civil Engineering (SAICE) at the CSIR International Convention Centre held in Pretoria from 16 to 18 March 2010.

"The learners were involved in a one-day workshop where they were shown 'what's out there in the real world' through sessions on 'Professionals of the Future, where they were given a toolbox for planning, directing and recording the workplace experience'," says Tammy Davies Esorfranki group marketing manager.

Also included in the workshop was a Resilience and Leadership' exercise plus an interactive anti-corruption session."All this encompassed much of the practical knowledge these young people can expect during and after their studies, which is critical to their ultimate success," says Davies.

Davies says that Esorfranki is fully aware of its role and responsibilities in the community at large and especially in the communities in which it operates. "This has inspired the theme - Siza Wena' or 'Help You' – of our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) campaign moving forward," she says.

Davies added that sustainability was the key. "We are genuinely interested in making a difference; therefore we will ensure that our projects are sustainable and that future generations will keep on benefiting from our ongoing involvement."

The second phase of 'Siza Wena' will be a road show to Cape Town and Durban, organised in co-operation with SAICE. Students and young civil engineering professionals would again benefit from this initiative.

"An important aspect of this programme is a 'train the trainer' component where Esorfranki and SAICE will be looking for suitable people to coach others who would in turn, help make this 'real world' guidance in the civil engineering industry a continuous and sustainable programme."

Esorfranki's next task will be a promotion aimed specifically at assisting younger learners to cope with maths and science. "Our aim is to assist the future young civil engineers to reach their full potential," Davies concluded.
